Alexander Slim
Alexander Slim’s ability and willingness to open himself up to new sensations by actively straddling the line of discomfort, allows him to fully embrace his emotions and transfer them so deliberately to a tangible form. Having traveled the world and immersed himself within numerous cultures, drifting in and out as a “nomad”, Alexander transcends borders both in his life and in his work. Although contemporary in nature - the scope of his art has no bounds as it evolves as he does, directly reflecting his encounters, physical ties and the social, economic and political zeitgeist. Through his work, Slim captures grievances, harmonies and joy, as a means to push communities to thoughtfully engage and reflect on the prevalent message of the work. His underlying hope is that his art be digested as a form of contemporary illustrative journalism which sparks feeling and ultimately pushes individuals into action and social progression.
Much like his artistic journey, Alexander Slim dances effortlessly between mediums refusing to commit to any one direction and to remain fluid and open to the environment in which he is creating. Through intuition, Slim embraces and playfully pays homage to the inspired moment, often even incorporating some of the material elements the setting has to offer. From painting on traditional canvas in France, salvaged denim in Ho Chi Minh City to wooden beams in Montreal, his pieces are comprised of a mixture of color, texture; motion and strokes; chaos and control.
