Based on a lifelong practice of aesthetic inquiry and improvisational spirit, he translates the language of jazz into paintings built from gesture, color, rhythm, and layered structure.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eBill’s parallel studies in visual art and music shape his approach to painting. While still in high school, Buchman studied painting and drawing with noted teachers Victor D’Amico and Fletcher Martin, and at Cornell University with Abstract Expressionist Robert Richenburg. An active jazz musician, he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from the New England Conservatory, where he studied piano in the Third Stream program under masters Ran Blake and Jaki Byard.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eHe is the author of Expressive Figure Drawing: New Materials, Concepts, and Techniques (Watson-Guptill\/Random House), a widely used instructional book on contemporary figure drawing, and has taught abstract painting and figure drawing workshops extensively for several decades. His work has been exhibited in galleries and cultural institutions in the United States and Europe.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eIn all his activities, Bill’s aim is to convey a sense of freedom, vitality, and connection, affirming art as both an intimate expression and a universal dialogue. Abstraction remains central to my work because of its inexhaustible vitality and its capacity to hold both structure and freedom in dynamic tension.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eMy background as a jazz musician and lifelong figure drawing practitioner informs this approach. In particular, the rhythmic intensity, pungent harmonies, and explosive lyricism of jazz are a major inspiration. In my paintings, line, color, shape, and gesture operate much like melody, harmony, and rhythm in music.
