Originally from Mexico, Derek is an architect by profession, a certified transformational coach, and has a post-degree diploma in business and project management. \r\u003cbr\u003eOver the years, his professional and personal life led him across diverse disciplines and geographies, including diverse techniques as watercolor, acrylic, and oil painting; he also even experimented with sculpture.\r\u003cbr\u003eIn 2021, Derek moved to Vancouver to pursue his postgraduate studies. During this time, he reignited his passion for drawing through a self-imposed “one sketch per day” challenge, marking the beginning of a new era in his artistic expression.\r\u003cbr\u003eHis recent work focuses on monochromatic drawings in charcoal, exploring the emotional depth of living beings and the natural world. Through bold contrast and refined technique, Derek aims to inspire reflection and emotional connection in a fast-paced, image-saturated world.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch4\u003eARTIST’S STATEMENT\u003c\/h4\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs a largely self-taught artist, architect, and holder of a postgraduate diploma in business and project management, I have spent my life exploring different forms of creative expression. From music, painting, sculpture, and literature to architecture and drawing, art has always been a fundamental part of how I understand and connect with the world.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eIn recent years, I embarked on one of the most meaningful journeys of my life: translating emotion, character, and presence into monochromatic drawings created with charcoal and graphite. Through my work, I seek to capture not only the physical appearance of a subject but also the intangible essence that makes every living being unique.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eMy subjects range from wildlife and portraiture to symbolic studies of the human form. Whether depicting a powerful predator, a fragile bird, an elderly face marked by time, or a contemplative gaze, I am continually inspired by the emotions, resilience, vulnerability, and dignity shared by all living beings. The more I draw, the more I discover the profound connections that unite us beyond species, age, culture, or circumstance.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eI chose charcoal as my primary medium because of its extraordinary ability to communicate through simplicity. Working primarily on paper and canvas, I explore the timeless dialogue between light and shadow, black and white, and the infinite range of grays that exist between them. In many ways, these contrasts mirror life itself—strength and fragility, certainty and mystery, solitude and connection.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eRather than pursuing absolute photorealism, I embrace the expressive qualities of the medium. I am fascinated by the subtle textures, soft transitions, and visible traces left by the artist's hand.
