With a background in fashion design, she brings a refined sensitivity to material, structure, and texture, often incorporating acrylics, glitter, brocade, and reflective elements into her canvases. Her intuitive process allows each piece to emerge organically, balancing vulnerability and strength.\r\u003cbr\u003eShe studied at the College for Design in Hanover, Germany and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Bremen, Germany and further specialized in textile design and Fair-Trade production in Chennai, India. \r\u003cbr\u003eComing from a family tradition of European bespoke tailoring, her work bridges craftsmanship and contemporary abstraction.\r\u003cbr\u003eDunja has exhibited in New York City, Miami, South Korea and Germany, and is currently expanding her international presence. She lives and works in Manhattan.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch4\u003eARTIST’S STATEMENT\u003c\/h4\u003e\u003cp\u003eMy paintings originate in textile memory. \r\u003cbr\u003eStatement \r\u003cbr\u003eLong before painting became my primary medium, I was fascinated by fabric—its colors, \r\u003cbr\u003etextures, cultural histories, methods of production, and the way it transforms when wrapped \r\u003cbr\u003earound the body like a painting. Fabric carries stories. It contains traces of place, labor, ritual, \r\u003cbr\u003eidentity, and time. This fascination became the foundation of my creative practice and \r\u003cbr\u003econtinues to inform the way I approach painting today. \r\u003cbr\u003eAlthough my work is rooted in the language of textiles, I do not seek to represent fabric literally. \r\u003cbr\u003eInstead, its influence appears in the structure of the work itself. I build paintings through layers, \r\u003cbr\u003etensions, concealments, and revelations, much like a garment is constructed. Pigment \r\u003cbr\u003ebecomes material rather than image. Surfaces are accumulated, interrupted, erased, and \r\u003cbr\u003erebuilt, allowing each painting to develop its own history. \r\u003cbr\u003eWorking between abstraction and suggestion, I am interested in emotional and psychological \r\u003cbr\u003elandscapes. Fragments emerge and dissolve, evoking traces of memory, bodies, architecture, \r\u003cbr\u003eand personal narratives. The canvas becomes a place of excavation where visible and \r\u003cbr\u003einvisible histories coexist. \r\u003cbr\u003eColor occupies a central role in my practice. I approach it both physically and emotionally, \r\u003cbr\u003eallowing tones to attract, resist, overwhelm, or comfort. Texture is never merely decorative; it \r\u003cbr\u003efunctions as evidence of process and transformation. Each surface records gestures, \r\u003cbr\u003erevisions, and moments of discovery. \r\u003cbr\u003eMy background in fashion and textiles continues to shape the rhythm of my compositions. I \r\u003cbr\u003ethink through ideas of folding, layering, tension, density, and exposure. Even in abstraction, the \r\u003cbr\u003ebody remains present—not as a figure, but as a trace. Questions of protection and \r\u003cbr\u003evulnerability, intimacy and performance, concealment and revelation recur throughout my \r\u003cbr\u003ework. \r\u003cbr\u003eFor me, painting is not an act of representation but of uncovering. Through layered surfaces \r\u003cbr\u003eand material gestures, I explore the intersections of memory, femininity, displacement, labor, \r\u003cbr\u003edesire, and cultural inheritance.
