I have always looked at the world through a romantic lens. Since\r\u003cbr\u003echildhood, I have been drawn to beauty, mystery, and the emotional character of the\r\u003cbr\u003enatural world. Because of this, I do not always paint a subject exactly as it appears. A\r\u003cbr\u003ereal place or object may become more mysterious, dreamlike, or imagined as I paint. I\r\u003cbr\u003euse these transformations to strengthen the emotion I experienced and to express what I\r\u003cbr\u003efelt rather than only what I saw.\r\u003cbr\u003eMy work begins with a moment of connection. I may see a landscape, a flower, or a\r\u003cbr\u003eparticular quality of light and feel a deep sense of awe and admiration, together with the\r\u003cbr\u003equiet regret that the moment is temporary. It will change, fade, or disappear. That feeling\r\u003cbr\u003emakes me want to pick up a brush and preserve something of the experience on canvas.\r\u003cbr\u003eFor me, painting is a way to hold onto a fleeting moment and give form to an inner\r\u003cbr\u003eexperience. Through my work, I hope to invite viewers to slow down, look again, and see\r\u003cbr\u003ethe familiar world from a different perspective. Tall evergreens rise in layers, some near and cool in the shadow, some pale with light, each one built stroke by stroke from life. I painted it from my terrace in West Vancouver, looking out into the distance. The far trees slip down toward a pale sheet of water lit by the sun, and the blue mountains rest on the horizon, dissolving into the sky.
