Born in Phoenix, Arizona, he began his training as a teenager apprenticing with Philip Curtis, a co-founder of the Phoenix Art Museum. He later studied under renowned artists William T. Wiley and Wayne Thiebaud at the University of California, Davis, before graduating cum laude from Pomona College. Following six years in San Francisco—where his work was exhibited at SFMOMA—he established his studio in Brooklyn in 1984.\r\u003cbr\u003eBendheim’s versatile practice encompasses large-scale public murals, fountains, sculptures, paintings, collages, and site-specific installations. His work has been widely exhibited at premier institutions, including the Museum of Arts and Design (NYC), SFMOMA, the Montclair Art Museum, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the Brooklyn Public Library, and the National Museum of Costa Rica, alongside international exhibitions in South Korea and Germany.\r\u003cbr\u003eHighlighted in the documentary series Created in Brooklyn and praised by The New York Times in 2025 as \"thrillingly...charming,\" Bendheim is a recipient of grants from NYFA and the City Artist Corps. Beyond the studio, he is an author of art commentary for the medical journal The Lancet and an active educator who teaches at The Art Students League of New York, with past teaching roles at The Brooklyn Museum and The College of Mount Saint Vincent. His work is included in numerous museum collections and represented by Julie Keyes Fine Art, 490 Atlantic Gallery, and 440 Gallery.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch4\u003eARTIST’S STATEMENT\u003c\/h4\u003e\u003cp\u003eMy art is a living tree with many branches. The art is form and color- based, and spans the boundaries between painting and sculpture, personal expression and site-specific public art. I work daily on my art, making drawings, paintings, public art and sculpture. I am a dedicated full-time artist, having produced hundreds of finished works.
