My process is a cycle of application and erasure: I build the surface only to scrape it back while wet, leaving behind a fragile palimpsest. These under-images are vital ghosts—remnants of earlier ideas that remain visible within the work.\r
At the heart of this technique is the use of pentimenti. I embrace both planned and accidental marks, layering paint to create a succession of present moments. This accumulation of history creates a distinct sensation of light emanating from within the canvas.\r
The meaning of my art—the interplay of memory, time, and human struggle—is inextricably linked to the physical reality of the oil painting process. The human figure, rendered in transparent veils of color, functions as a visible archive of its own history. My physical engagement with the surface ensures that the process of creation is synonymous with the resulting narrative.\r
These works reflect the 21st-century human subject: a collection of memories and hopes layered over time. That summer the light hung on late into the evening until the sky rolled into a blue hour. While walking the Parisian streets under those deep blue skies, I would often stop to glance at books spread out like magical treatises on art and life. We lived that summer in the shadow of Monet, Manet, and Caillebotte. Two of Manet's last studios were on our street and nearby on the Place de Dublin, Caillebotte set his magical painting "Paris Street; Rainy Day" ("Rue de Paris, temps de pluie"). Nearby was the Gare Saint-Lazare which inspired Monet to create Turneresque images of trains and steam. \r
\r
I carried those memories with me as I painted "Bookseller's Night" along with time traveling thoughts of San Francisco and New York. \r
\r
A few years ago, I stood outside in a clearing of a Monterey, California forest near the coast in the middle of the night with my brother and René Boitelle, a painting conservator at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Unlike the skies in Los Angeles, we were able to see the stars in the night sky and of course thought of Vincent Van Gogh’s painterly evocations of the glittering night. Van Gogh was able to capture the night in his paintings with his skillful use of midnight blue and starry yellow. Gazing at a Van Gogh painting of a star filled sky, it seems as if he knew that the lights he saw in the dark night sky had traveled from the deepest reaches of time. According to physicists, as we gaze at the stars, in essence we are looking back towards the beginning of time.\r
\r
Later that week, I stood with René and another conservator, Devi Ormond, before a Van Gogh painting of a weaver; the painting was laid out like a patient on a table in the Getty Museum’s conservation lab. The work seemed so fragile, yet at the same time sturdy and timeless hearkening back to an era of firelight, candlelight, and moonlight. Soon after Van Gogh painted his weavers, the advent of electricity would completely alter the character of the night. Perhaps in every painting of the night there is a hint of this loss, echoing the shadowed forms in the artwork. I am reminded of the nights many years ago when, before painting, I would put Miles Davis on the record player. I would drop the needle on the first track and listen to the hiss and crackle as ‘Round Midnight began to play– the music always muted, blurred as if it emerged from a smoke filled room.

Oil on linen.

36x24x1.50"

There is something special about an L.A. night in the rain. Reflected, sparkling light bouncing off canals, “gibigiane” in Venetian dialect is akin to the liquid nature of transparent oils glowing from within, as if light lived within the pigment.\r
This painting is a companion piece to "Golden Hour - Venice." These two artworks act as pillars for my Venice/Venezia series of artworks inspired by the two water lapped cities.

Oil on linen.

24x30x1.50"

My oil on linen painting "Golden Hour - Venice" was inspired by the quality of light during the "golden hour" – the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the light is softer, warmer, and more diffuse.\r
My paintings of California at dusk are atmospheric, layered explorations of light, time, and the emotional resonance of a familiar yet ever-changing landscape. \r
This painting is a companion piece to "Golden Hour - Venezia." These two artworks act as pillars for my Venice/Venezia series of artworks inspired by the two water lapped cities.

Oil on linen.

54x54x1.50"

"The Greatest of Wanderers" was inspired by the efforts of the Sheldrick Trust as they strive to create a world that believes all elephants deserve to roam wild and free, safe from harm.\r
\r
I first became aware of the fragile nature of our planet as an elementary school student. The feudal lord Yorifusa, founder of the Mito Tokugawa clan, started the construction of the garden, and it was completed by his son with the help of Chinese scholar Shu Shunsui in 1669. There are reproductions of historic Japanese and Chinese scenery throughout the garden, represented by the miniature hills, ponds, stones and trees. For a number of years I lived and created my art in a loft on the sixth floor of a building on Market Street in San Francisco. Beneath me, the city breathed. The flow of historic streetcars on MUNI's F Line combined with the flux of humanity created a rich visual tapestry that directly inspired my new painting. Today, just before I wrote these thoughts on the artwork, I was able to follow the route of Streetcar #1059 on the Market Street Railway's live map. San Francisco memories flooded in as I watched the car make its way from Fisherman's Wharf, to the Ferry Building, to the Cable Car Turnaround, then past my old home and up to the Castro. Each streetcar in the San Francisco fleet is painted in historic train colors from streetcar lines across the globe.
