Robin L Potter
Robin is a self-taught artist who has been greatly influenced by modernism. The literature and art of this period, when conventions of genre were broken and when visual artists sought to escape the boundaries of form, have had a lasting impact on her. Mondrian, Rothko, Motherwell, and Scully are among her favourite artists. While she enjoys her teaching career, her artistic practice recenters and restores. As an emerging artist, her work has appeared in corporate buildings, galleries, and juried shows in Toronto and Markham. She has also served as President of the Markham Group of Artists.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I work mostly in acrylic, yet also like to explore how different materials shape the meaning of the work. So while I love the collision of large elements in my pieces, I will also sometimes obsess over smaller materials that evoke multiple histories. Incorporating objects, writing, papers, fabric, and other materials into the work makes it vibrant with multidimensional intention and layers into the pieces shadows and texture that create open contexts ripe for interpretation. I work on paper, wood panels, heavy duty floor duck, but mostly on stretched gallery canvases.
