Islande Constant

Home All

Islande is self-taught and art lover since she always works exclusively with acrylic. She was born in Haiti with two grandmother merchants and a mother seamstress. She studied art history, nothing prepared her to become a painter, she really started painting in 2019 after painful events. Over time, in these explorations, her experiences and online training, colors and shapes have taken their place. This evolution reflects her desire to express herself without using words.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

The most important thing for me is inspiration and creation. I have a real joy in filling a blank canvas with my feelings or passing a message. I work by instinct, I improvise movement, that's why I rarely make sketches.
I am often inspired by Philome Obin, Frida Kahlo, and Jackson Pollock. My style is a mixture of naive expressionism and calculated casting, guided by my studies in art history where I discovered these artists who have marked me. I am perpetually in search of inspiration, in everyday life, current events, and even in my loved ones, in short, my work represents my mood and my stories.
You will notice changes in the lines, the movements of the characters, and the nuances of the colors, over time, I have spent a lot of time studying the different types of colors to match, the reactions between them, such as transparency and opacity. I am aware that I do not respect the rules of art, I paint from the heart and emotions, sometimes my works may have similarities but each one tells its own story.
