Born in Cavite, Philippines in 1991, he immigrated to Calgary in 2004, arriving in the middle of winter. His character-driven work combines bold patterns, vibrant colour, and gestural lines with a playful cast of recurring figures, and he positions cartoon figuration as serious contemporary art with real emotional and formal weight.\r
Blanco has painted large-scale public works across Calgary, including murals for BUMP Festival 2026, and his clients include the City of Calgary, Calgary Transit, CADA, RBC, MNP, and Contemporary Calgary. He co-founded the Filipino diaspora art collective Indioz Bravoz, works as a gallerist and curator, and is currently developing The Psychology of Whimsy, a research project on playfulness as a serious subject in public art.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I make character-driven work about joy, nostalgia, and connection. My figures look playful, but they carry real emotional weight. I want them to meet people where they are, on a street corner or in a gallery, and make the space feel more human.\r
I work in spray paint and Posca markers, and I follow a design philosophy I call hodo-hodo, a Japanese phrase meaning just enough. Nothing extra, nothing missing.\r
Playfulness is serious to me. My ongoing research project, The Psychology of Whimsy, looks at how whimsical public art affects the people who live with it every day. I believe a cartoon figure can hold as much meaning as any other subject in contemporary art.
