His practice is grounded in appropriation, treating the techniques and imagery of art history as working material rather than as reference. He is the author of REVEAL: The Empowerment of Appropriation Art (2024) published by Snap Collective, which sets out this method across more than eighty of his paintings.\r
\r
He is currently developing Ghosts of the Ice, a body of work that extends the method to climate. The paintings are made in thermochromic pigment and mounted in electrically heated frames fitted with a viewer-controlled dial, so that the image leaves the panel as the surface warms. The frames are in prototype. Alongside the paintings, the project includes a documentary film in production, a serialized blog, and an original album.\r
\r
Koscher completed The Arctic Circle expeditionary residency in July 2026, sailing the Svalbard archipelago aboard the three-masted schooner Rembrandt van Rijn, and will be in residence at the Spitsbergen Artists Center in Longyearbyen in 2027. \r
\r
Recent exhibitions include Icons, Rebels & Saints, Wallbox Gallery (2025); the Austrian National Day cultural program at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center (2024); and Reveal, The Caldwell Gallery (2022). No one has stirred as many emotions as Kurt Cobain did while painting him. Like a time machine, it brought me right back to 1992-1994. Kurt influenced me during those years tremendously. So much that I also started a band called "Mistake". We sounded like a mix between Nirvana (lyrics) and Cat Stevens (musical) We even made it to the radio once. And when I say once I mean once. But back to Kurt. What I love so much about him is his intensity! Dave Grohl called it "Spitting Nails" by that, he was talking about the intensity Kurt used to sing his songs. So powerful and frankly I just don't hear it like that nowadays anymore. You terrified me, inspired me, and yep, the beaches are open this 4th of July (says one very bad mayor)\r
\r
My first encounter with JAWS is burned into my brain, though I can’t tell you exactly how old I was, only that I was definitely too young to sleep afterward. One worn-out VHS tape, one sinister fin cutting through the water, and boom: obsession unlocked.\r
\r
I didn’t just watch JAWS, I made it my whole personality. By 1984, I had a “Shark Study” notebook where I scribbled every fact I could find about sharks and taped in every newspaper clipping I could get my hands on. Spielberg pulled a Hitchcock, adapting, reinventing, squeezing suspense out of setbacks. Hitchcock did it from the silent era to the 70s; Spielberg did it on the ocean with a plastic shark and a deadline. Over the years, JAWS didn’t just scare me, it showed me how to craft a story that stirs the imagination. JAWS burned into my brain that story beats spectacle, every single time and problems can force you to be more creative than any perfect plan ever will.\r
\r
So here’s to JAWS at 50, and remember: “Amity, as you know, means friendship”... and according to the mayor, the beaches are open. As a European, I grew up hearing stories of the Native Americans and the lands that were taken from them. But standing on the vast plains, stretching from Yellowstone, the Black Hills to the Badlands, brought an entirely new understanding of the enormity of their loss. The sheer scale of the landscape is overwhelming, and you realize just how significant it was to the Blackfeet (Niitsitapi) and Crow (Apsáalooke) tribes and many more, whose ancestral lands were taken from them. Areas considered sacred, spiritual places where these tribes thrived before being forcibly removed. The Blackfeet once roamed the northern plains and the Crow lived along the Yellowstone River. Both tribes embodied a deep connection to the land, and their stories of resilience resonate deeply.\r
\r
I also learned about Wa-Ksa-Ksa, or Broken Jaw, from the Lakota, a Sioux tribe. I had seen a photograph of him before, but being in the lands they fought so hard to protect brought the impact of history into sharp focus. The tribes were cheated out of their homes, their dignity, and their futures.
