Despite being diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 15, she earned a Fine Arts Diploma from Langara College and a bachelor's degree in art history from the University of British Columbia. She also received the Courage to Come Back Award and the Diamond Jubilee Medal. She paints mostly in acrylics.  She has written a memoir titled My Schizophrenic Life: The Road to Recovery from Mental Illness and Chop Shtick by Sandra Yuen MacKay. Her poetry book, with 26 art plates, is titled I Want to be Buried Standing Up. She enjoys playing the drums for Beautiful Lizards.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch4\u003eARTIST’S STATEMENT\u003c\/h4\u003e\u003cp\u003eI paint house portraits of older Vancouver homes to capture the disappearing city, isolation, nostalgia, and serenity. My florals are about the life cycle, colour, movement, environment, love and hope. I take photographs which i develop paintings from. I enjoy painting people in urban settings which give insight into character, fashion and mirror the artist.
