A lifelong art learner, she has studied photography, sculpture, life drawing, art history, and painting. She is the founder and chair of a collaborative artist group in Victoria, BC, and has received three Juror’s Choice Awards at the Saanich Peninsula Arts and Crafts Society Spring Show since 2023.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eShelley paints quietly in her home studio, surrounded by photographs, natural light, and the rhythms of daily life. Her creative practice is informed by a diverse life experience that includes many years in healthcare leadership and as a piano teacher. These experiences, along with her ongoing pursuit of the arts, have shaped a disciplined yet intuitive approach to painting. When she is not in the studio, Shelley sings with a local classical choir.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eHer work has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions and galleries throughout southern British Columbia and in London, England. Her paintings are held in private collections across Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch4\u003eARTIST’S STATEMENT\u003c\/h4\u003e\u003cp\u003eShelley Hordiyuk looks at things another way, challenging conventional ideas of beauty. Is a bouquet most beautiful when it is freshly arranged, or after time has faded its petals? Is a tree beautiful on its own, or can beauty also be found in the space that surrounds it? Does a landscape’s beauty lie only in its lushness, or can it also be found in drought, change, and decay?\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eWhether painting flowers, trees, landscapes, or the human figure, Shelley seeks beauty beyond the obvious—beauty shaped by time, resilience, light, and transformation. Her paintings invite us to pause, look more closely, and consider what might otherwise be overlooked.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eShelley works primarily in acrylic, sometimes incorporating collage, oil, and ink. Her process is both intuitive and intentional.
