Audiences come close to admire the beautiful origami only to be surprised that they also form a portrait when viewed from a new perspective. Rather than portraying the usual suspects in pop art, my series of portraits focuses on Asian pop-icons in North America. From Bruce Lee, to Marvel superhero Simu Liu and Liu Yi-Fei’s Mulan to K-Pop star Rose. This year, I chose to portray the beautiful and talented Eileen Gu. At 22 she is already the most decorated Olympian of her sport, an international model and scholar. Her choice to compete for China, the backlash, and her response spark important conversations about identity and the Asian-American experience. \r
\r
And I’ve immortalized her in art using hand-folded origami cranes and lotus flowers. They are symbols of resilience, transformation, and grace. The work sits at the intersection of contemporary portraiture and traditional Asian craft. A fitting tribute to Eileen’s own duality.
