A lawsuit here. A firing there. Public ridicule. Corporate pressure. Political retaliation. Eventually, silence becomes the safe option.\r
\r
Whether through fear, financial pressure, or social consequences, the result is: fewer people are willing to challenge power, and the stories we hear become increasingly curated.\r
\r
This painting grew from my concern about the current state of free expression in the United States. In recent years, journalists, comedians, authors, actors, news anchors, academics, and public figures who have criticized President Trump or his allies have, in some cases, faced lawsuits, threats, public attacks, or even professional consequences. Some have chosen to leave traditional media for independent platforms such as YouTube or Substack, where they feel they can speak more freely.\r
\r
This painting is about a pattern that has appeared throughout history whenever power seeks to shape public perception.\r
\r
Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, represents the power to influence the outcome of conflict. Themis, the goddess of justice, represents truth, fairness, and the rule of law. I merged them into a single figure because democracy requires both. Justice without the ability to defend it is fragile. Victory without justice is hollow.\r
\r
Yet this goddess cannot speak.\r
\r
Her mouth is sealed with tape. She still carries the scales of justice and the sword of protection, but her voice has been taken away.\r
\r
Across her body, sections have been deliberately redacted. Pieces of her disappear, revealing the background beneath. More than censorship, they symbolize a reality in which information is selectively revealed, inconvenient truths are erased, and narratives are carefully edited until they no longer resemble the whole story.\r
\r
The title, Curated Truth, asks a simple question: if enough pieces are removed, is it still the truth?\r
\r
Every generation faces its own struggle over who controls the narrative. Sometimes censorship is obvious. More often, it arrives gradually—through economic pressure, social conformity, political influence, or algorithms that quietly determine which voices are amplified and which fade into obscurity.\r
\r
Freedom of expression has never meant freedom from disagreement. It means protecting the space where disagreement is possible and the whole story is allowed to be told, including the bad parts.\r
\r
Democracy depends on our willingness to defend that space.
