She is confronted by the unknown; and as children are often unafraid of senseless wonder she contemplates the mystery with confidence but very little apprehension.  There is a space between her and the unknown—there is no hand reaching out in either direction.  I began the painting from imagination and used my studio mirror to finalise the proportions.
