Barbara Mitchell

I am a mix media artist and instructor living in Edmonton, Alberta. One of my passions is to teach women the wonders of art and how it can fill your life with color, creativity, but more importantly, how to hold onto the process of creating rather than only the outcome.

Perhaps this is why I am so fond of abstract painting. Color mixing, using various substances like India ink, Alcohol inks, watercolor and acrylics, papers, cheesecloth, all in one sitting, just to watch everything flow and meld and become something entirely different.

With abstract I am not forced into a certain end-result. I don't have a significant image in mind. It is truly the power of play and spontaneity.

I do however love what I call "abstract with intent." This is when I do wish to create a sort of landscape or flower garden, but don't have the where-with-all to create realistically, so I improvise with fantasy or make-believe. This can be done using texture, papers, collage items, or just swirls of paint that capture a fleeting image but not a firm one.

I'm also very taken with encaustics, collage, Alcohol inks on Yupo, and CitraSolv.
Mix media of any kind appeals to me with its wide embrace of items to partake of, to create something that can move my inner self and others who might appreciate it.
