Brandon Powell

I’ve been drawing since I could hold a pencil, but it took leaving a 14-year marketing career to finally pursue art full-time. Growing up a paper and pencil became a way to escape the sounds of gunshots and gangs to fantasy worlds of comic book super heroes and classic cartoons. As a self-taught artist, I draw inspiration from legends like Ernie Barnes (“The Sugar Shack”/ Good Times painting), Todd McFarland (Spawn), and Aaron McGruder (The Boondocks).

My paintings explore the beautiful complexity of human experience. Like a well-loved stuffed animal with its visible scars and carefully mended wounds, or a child fighting to preserve the innocence of play in a world increasingly dominated by screens and technology, each piece tells a story of resilience and the profound beauty of uninterrupted childhood.

I don’t create art that needs complex interpretation. Rather than the long winded, pretentious compliments from art critics, the best compliment I’ve received is simply: “Your art makes me happy.” That’s my mission. Each painting invites you to smile, to remember, and to reconnect with unbridled childhood hope. It’s a celebration of joy – pure and unfiltered, finding beauty in our imperfections and the marks we collect along the way.
