Hello! My name is Cameron, an indigenous artist from the NWT now residing in Montreal, QC. I've been a filmmaker for many years, currently working as a cinematographer for a marketing agency. Over the years, looking for creative outlets that can remain for me and just me, painting has slowly crept to be my greatest passion. I love it, I love the expression, and if it's about the journey and not the destination, nothing beats having a nice cup of coffee and painting on my balcony on an early Sunday morning.

I've been accruing a collection over the past few years, namely giving them as gifts to friends, though I think it's time to start thinning out the stack and seeing if Montreal and people are interested in having some of my art hanging in their homes and hallways.

My approach lately to creating new art is meeting with strangers, and working out together an idea for a new painting. I find that someone elses direction always helps me think in different ways when it comes to assembling a composition, and being able to brainstorm an idea with photography comes very naturally to me with my career. Anyways, I love to talk, if you happen to want to buy my art, or even help me come up with a new idea for a canvas, feel free to reach out!

Visiting the Museum of Fine Arts with some friends a few months ago, we found a beautiful beam of light in one of the halls, quickly posing like the old renaissance paintings hanging around us. Sometimes light ideas come about for stories- as far as this one goes, at least in my own mind, this person has died, and ghosts, shepherds to the afterlife, come in the form of purple drapery.

I always like the idea of undersea creatures coexisting with humanoids. This is one of the longest paintings to finish for me so far, a little over a year from when I started it. It went through a lot of revisions, angles of the carousel, the types of fish in the sea, the flow of the jellyfish and the selection of drinks.

This is one that's a continuation of another, all around an idea about what a dream of an orangutan might be. Shapes, colors, moods, nothing more, floating feelings. This one was a more modern setting idea- a date, in a busy bar. All around the center couple is a claustrophobic dance taking place, some people in an intimate mood, others staring blankly. It was a fun idea that I think I'll continue to chase in a future painting.

I started a series last year, in which I meet with strangers and come up with a painting while visiting their apartment, having them pose for me. This was the first of the bunch.

This is one going off of the vibe that I’ve been in lately, a deep desire to plant thick, overwhelming plants. I had the idea to go into this as if a greenhouse for plants is a beautiful place to be, a lounge, a place to relax and bask with your friends. I had my lovely friend Sophia pose for these in my living room- a dancer by trade, which was wonderful for having many unique, contorted poses to work with. I think it’s my favorite painting yet.

A great person has died. Family joins, of various levels of interest in the person. I wanted to create a piece that showed off a grandoise character, contrasting it with all that remains of them, physically and in memory.
