Charlene is a Chinese American Artist in Chicago, IL. At the School of the Art Institute, she used oil paints to create vivid portraits. Later she transitioned to creating jewelry and functional art. After a hiatus, she returned to painting with a new approach and drawing inspiration from nature: flowers, trees, water. These explorations with watercolors were the starting point for her current work. Beginning with collaging her watercolors, she began to incorporate a variety of objects. With growing awareness of the issues surrounding plastic and how little is actually recycled, she sought ways to incorporate throwaway objects with her watercolors. Charlene assembles and weaves a variety of elements from her daily life to draw attention to the impact plastics are having on our environment.
