Christopher Watts (b. 1991, New York) is a California-based artist specializing in physical, double-sided paintings woven with copper wire. Rooted in a dedicated study of ancient art forms, myth, and symbol, his practice is deeply informed by symbolic languages, cosmogony and cosmology. Driven by a highly conceptual approach, which includes the development of a custom, sound-based alphabet; Watts's work investigates what arises when we “see” from a deeply intuitive space, which directly shapes his approach to his craft. Watts's tactile, raw canvas works engage themes of mysticism and cosmic transformation, exploring how the ancient and metaphysical operate within physical dimensions. Captivated by the invisible forces that shape our world, he translates the unknown through boundary-pushing work and concepts. Alongside his studio practice, performance serves as another avenue to explore and activate the power of mythology. I am Watts, a Creator diving into the realm of the mystical; exploring the power and the relationship we have with the unseen.
My visions as an artist is to shift the way we experience art both internally and externally. Everything we create is alive, so imagine; not just analyzing a painting, but feeling its presence through all of your senses! I want my work to excite curiosity, inviting viewers to be aware of this dance and the inherent mystical nature of our lives.
In a word, I strive for Presence. I want my work & craft to be an exploration of the space in-between thought, using creation & intuition to cultivate innate psychic awareness. Just like listening isn't confined to our ears, I believe experiencing art should be about embracing the totality of consciousness, and listening attentively to the heart of The Unknown, so we may experience the power of Perfect Presence.
