David Trowbridge

David is a Portland native who spent summers as a feral child in an abandoned logging camp in the Tillamook forest. Being let loose among the trees and rivers, with a predilection for escaping reality, laid the foundation for his development as an artist. Today, as a city dweller, he borrows imagery from the urban & natural environments and uses tools common to tradesmen and graffiti artists, along with traditional fine art materials, to create his acrylic paintings.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I paint from source images such as nature (plein air), photos, sketches, and sports page clippings. I pluck elements from these sources like rhythm, shape, texture, and color, to use in the construction of the paintings. These are the raw materials, and they may be organized into recognizable patterns or not. Throughout the process my attention and inspiration shifts back-and-forth between the source material and the painting itself, each suggesting what to do next. It’s a collaborative process. I am like a lighting rod directing the energy from one place to another.
