Douglas E. Taylor

Douglas E. Taylor is an American contemporary visual artist and poet living in Portland, Oregon. Known for his mastery of complex printmaking and mixed-media, his work is deeply inspired by nature and the human condition. Taylor received his MFA from Washington University in St. Louis. He lived as an artist, art business owner, and instructor at Lake Tahoe for 20 years, and in western Montana for 15 years.
He built and designed his own large motorized intaglio etching press to accommodate his diverse printing needs as he creates in multiple processes. He enjoys sharing his knowledge and experiences through talks and instructions. Taylor writes poetry that often accompanies his visual artworks in attempts to articulate what is often unseen.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

“I use nature to symbolize how humans are very individual, and how we are all the same as we place ourselves on this little place on the immense timeline. To me, the leaves on a tree are individual poems sung by the wind that embraces each one, hung in the light and the dark of each season.
I employ various printmaking processes to convey a distinct visual language. I hope that the layers I use are like overlapping instruments in an orchestration, easier to feel than to hear individually. Every experience could be different depending on the viewer's experience and their pondering skills.”
