GORDON LEVERTON

Gordon Leverton's art is recognizable at a glance: striking geometry, vibrant palettes, and shadows that stretch across surfaces like time. By isolating structures and simplifying form, he invites viewers to see familiar spaces with a fresh perspective.

His work captures not just what a city looks like, but how it feels. It's a practice built on close observation, abstraction, and deep attention to what's often overlooked.

Being self-taught just means you found your own way in. That's exactly what Leverton did. With no formal art training, he turned to the city around him for inspiration. Rooftops. Alleyways. Side Streets.

He began breaking the built environment into planes of colour, light, and shadow-transforming the everyday into bold, graphic compositions that carry his unmistakable voice.

His portrayal of the city’s architectural elements rendered with flattened perspective, bright colours, and strong play of light and shadow has become his signature style. As he further describes his process:

“I break down the city into component. Shadows, buildings, skylines all become part of the same plane and transform into pieces of a puzzle. Using acrylics, I explore a theme common to the urban experience - how community connects us all.”

Leverton was awarded the 2024 City of Hamilton (Canada) Creative Artist Award, elected into The Ontario Society of Artists (OSA) in 2024 and honored the 2023 Art of Heritage Award from The City of Hamilton (Canada) and Hamilton Municipal Heritage Committee for his significant role in educating people on Hamilton’s heritage. His work has appeared in numerous publications, broadcasts, journals and media TV and movies and is widely collected, both nationally and internationally.

Leverton has created a new body of work inspired from his recent 2025 international artist residency in Mexico, travels to Peru and Portugal, communities in Toronto (Canada), and from his hometown in Hamilton (Canada). He is planning his 2026 international residency and exhibit in Mexico City during Mexico Art Week in February 2026.

Gordon Leverton is proof of what's possible when you stay curious, keep working, and trust that your perspective matters.
