Gorkem Can

Görkem Can is a Turkish-born abstract visual artist based in Los Angeles. Her work is rooted in a deep curiosity about existence, perception, and the unseen forces that shape human experience. From an early age, she has questioned the nature of time, identity, and the structures, both internal and societal, that influence consciousness. These inquiries continue to guide her artistic practice.
Through abstraction, color, and texture, Görkem translates sensory and emotional experiences into visual form. Painting becomes a way to express what words cannot, exploring emotional and psychological landscapes that often go unseen. Her work reflects stillness as a heightened state of perception, nonlinear time, quiet rhythms, and the subtle forces that shape awareness.
Görkem’s practice combines intuitive abstraction with influences from media, digital design, and creative production. She has exhibited internationally, including solo shows such as Scent Mentor Collection in Los Angeles in 2025 and group exhibitions like Dreams and Nightmares in London in 2026 and Red & White in New York in 2026. She has also created commissioned works for private clients and brands, translating personal narratives into immersive abstract experiences.
Alongside her studio practice, Görkem has contributed to creative direction, set design, and digital visual concepts for fashion campaigns, music projects, and multimedia productions. She holds an MBA from Southern States University, Los Angeles, a Graduate Certificate in Business and Management of Entertainment from UCLA Extension, and a BA in Media and Communication from Izmir University of Economics. She is fluent in Turkish and English, with working knowledge of Spanish.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I am Görkem, a Turkish-born abstract visual artist based in Los Angeles. My practice is grounded in an ongoing exploration of existence, perception, and the unseen forces that shape how we experience reality. From an early age, I have been drawn to questions of time, identity, and the subtle structures constructed by society. These inquiries continue to guide both the conceptual and emotional direction of my work.
Language often feels limited in its ability to express the depth and complexity of internal experience. Painting becomes a way to move beyond those limits. Through abstract forms, layered color, and texture, I explore emotional and psychological landscapes that exist beneath the surface of everyday perception. My work reflects moments of stillness, tension, and quiet transformation, inviting viewers into a space that is intuitive rather than literal.
Art is my primary means of communication. Rather than offering fixed narratives, my paintings create open environments for reflection, allowing each viewer to engage with the work through their own memories, sensations, and inner states. The goal is not explanation, but connection, presence, and the shared experience of something felt rather than defined.
