ARTIST’S STATEMENT

As a watercolorist I experiment with different techniques painting images that surround me daily.
I paint the overall image at first, laying down big washes of color connecting the shapes, letting the image emerge from the paper. Once the image is blocked in, I work to separate the big shapes into smaller shapes by adding value and color. Once the underpainting is set, I can finesse the image, cleaning edges, adding darks, or removing color.
I usually paint the image with exaggerated color not competing with the photo reference, I am striving to find the excitement that compelled me to paint it in the first place.
The photo reference is a valuable guide but I let the painting speak to me and it tells me where to go and what to do.
