Hillary Gillett

Hillary Gillett is a self-taught multidisciplinary visual artist based in downtown Edmonton, Alberta. Hillary has always felt a deep connection to creative expression. From an early age, she immersed herself in the arts, participating in theatre and exploring visual art as a powerful outlet for self-expression and storytelling. Hillary is the founder of her own creative business Soulsplatter Works, where she offers personalized commissioned artwork and original pieces, and extends her artistic vision through prints featured on t-shirts, hoodies and other merchandise. Hillary’s
passion lies in creating and selling her own original artwork—pieces that reflect her lived experiences, inner world, and the dynamic environment around her.
Her art is often influenced by urban life and the everyday humanity she witnesses in
Edmonton’s core. Her style is bold, emotive, and ever evolving, shaped by both personal
experience and a spirit of connection with others through images.
In addition to her artistic practice, Hillary is deeply committed to social impact. She has
worked with at-risk youth and young offenders. This commitment to giving back is central to who she is—as an artist and as a person. Adventurous, driven, and always up for a new challenge, Hillary continues to explore new mediums, techniques, and platforms to grow her practice and connect with others. Through her art, she invites viewers into honest moments—sometimes beautiful, sometimes gritty, but always real.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My art reflects the world as I see it—raw, layered, and full of contradictions. Deeply influenced by the grit and vibrancy of
street art, I gravitate toward what’s often overlooked: the clash between beauty and discomfort, the tension between what’s
seen and what’s hidden. I’m drawn to the
imperfect and unpolished realities of everyday life that speak louder than curated perfection. I work primarily in acrylic and spray paint, often creating portraits and figures that combine graffiti-inspired textures with neon (glow in the dark) colour palettes and pop culture references. My evolving style reflects a constant curiosity and commitment to experimentation—I’m
always pushing myself to try new techniques and explore different visual languages. This journey of growth is just as
important as the final piece. I believe art has the power to hold space for difficult conversation and shared truths.
As a bi-racial member of the LGBT+ community, my perspective informs everything I create. Through my work, I aim to create a connection—to offer viewers
a moment of recognition, empathy, or challenge. I want people to
see not only art, but the truth behind it. My highest goal is for my work to mean something—to reflect something real.
Looking at my pieces is an invitation to step inside a moment. A feeling. A shared experience. And perhaps, to see the world with a new perspective.
