Ina Khai

I’m Ina Khai, a interdisciplinary artist whose work is a vibrant reflection of African Diasporic cultures and an elevation of marginalized voices. My artistic practice spans watercolor painting, music, dance, theater, writing, photography, and video production—each medium a unique thread in the tapestry of my storytelling.

Art became my sanctuary and a rediscovery of self when I began painting in 2019. It awakened forgotten skills and unearthed an unshakable confidence and peace, encouraging me to lean into my other creative disciplines. My journey is a testament to the power of art as both a healer and a catalyst for growth.

My creative process mirrors the fluidity of watercolor—bold washes of color layered and shaped into narratives that challenge perspectives and celebrate resilience. This approach is deeply personal, a reflection of my voice as an artist and my vision for a more inclusive and empathetic world.

Guided by my sociology degree from Columbia University, my work draws inspiration from movements like the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement, Black Feminist Thought, and Hip Hop. As a creative sociologist, I weave cultural and societal exploration into my art, merging identity, spirituality, and justice into every project.

Whether through a brushstroke, a frame, or a lyric, I channel empowerment, spirituality, and Black feminist thought, crafting art that invites connection and sparks meaningful conversations. My passion lies in transforming the personal into the universal—bridging self-discovery and social justice in a way that resonates with others.

I am a cultural explorer. My art is an invitation to engage with themes of spirituality, self-discovery and social justice, fostering connection and sparking meaningful conversations.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My art-making process is rooted in storytelling and emotional resonance, inspired by the richness of Black American and African Diasporic cultures and narratives. I work across mediums, including pencil, watercolor, mixed media, cinematic documentary-style video, and editorial photography. Each medium offers a unique way to explore and amplify the themes central to my practice.
My creative journey began with foundational training in music, dance, photography, and theater, starting with my participation in the WPAS Children of the Gospel Mass Choir. This formal training continued through my studies at Columbia University, where I immersed myself in the performing and visual arts. Over the years, I have expanded my artistic repertoire with self-taught techniques in watercolor and film, blending structured education with personal exploration to create a distinct artistic voice.

Using pencil, watercolor, and mixed media, I begin with sketches that encapsulate themes such as the beauty of Black women, the feminization of nature, and the interconnectedness of wellness and the chakra system. Each piece evolves through intentional layering and texturing, guided by the medium’s inherent fluidity. My watercolor work, for instance, employs Wet-on-Wet and Wet-on-Dry techniques to create gradients and contrasts that evoke emotion and depth..

In editorial photography, my modeling experience informs my artistic vision, allowing me to create compositions that emphasize movement, storytelling, and the beauty of form. By merging my technical understanding of lighting, angles, and post-production with my creative sensibilities, I produce imagery that blurs the lines between fashion and fine art, grounding my visual narratives in both style and substance.
In video, I employ cinematic techniques to bring motion and sound to my narratives. Deliberate composition, dynamic framing, and precise editing create immersive visual stories that capture the essence of my themes.

The artworks, films, and photographs I create embody my training, self-taught techniques, and personal philosophies. They are testaments to my commitment to fostering empowerment, self-awareness, and healing through visual narratives. Every brushstroke, frame, and shot reflects a journey—personal and collective—toward self-discovery and connection.
To truly experience my work, I encourage viewers to approach it as a meditative dialogue, allowing time to absorb its layers and themes. My art is not just about aesthetics; it offers a reflective space to heal, celebrate heritage, and explore identity. Whether viewed in stillness, motion, or imagery, each piece invites an immersive experience of storytelling that bridges the personal and universal.
