Jenny Liu

Born in 1962, Jenny Liu lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. From an early age, she was drawn to color and form. Drawing became her first language—a way to observe the world and to express what words could not yet hold.

In 1979, she began her studies in Landscape Architecture at Tongji University in Shanghai, China. Alongside her formal training, she immersed herself in courses in drawing, watercolor, and the history of Western fine art. During these formative years, Jenny came to understand that art was not simply an interest, but an essential part of her inner life—something she would one day return to with full devotion.

She earned her Bachelor of Engineering in Landscape Architecture in 1983 and went on to work with multidisciplinary design and landscape architecture firms in China, Japan, and Canada.

In 1993, after completing her Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Jenny returned to Vancouver, where she spent seven years practicing landscape architecture in the public sector, designing various types of public parks and playgrounds. In 2000, she established her own landscape architectural consulting firm and successfully completed more than one hundred landscape architectural design projects, including several award-winning works. During this period, she traveled extensively throughout Europe, visiting world-renowned art museums and galleries for artistic and design inspiration.

After nearly twenty years of running her own firm, Jenny made a pivotal decision in 2018 to follow a long-held calling and devote herself to painting full time.

Today, Jenny’s art reflects a lifetime of observing, shaping, and listening to the natural world. Painting has become a meditative practice—one that allows her to explore memory, emotion, and the quiet spaces between the visible and the imagined.

As a dedicated artist, Jenny has participated in numerous juried exhibitions in Canada, the United States, and Japan. In 2022, she became an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Her watercolor and mixed-media paintings are held in private collections across the United States, Canada, Singapore, and Mexico.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Jenny Liu is a Canadian Chinese artist based in Vancouver, Canada. She is best known for her ethereal, atmospheric mountain landscape paintings, which reflect her profound fascination with the mountains of Western Canada, the Pacific Northwest, and beyond.

Drawing inspiration from both Eastern and Western artistic traditions—ranging from Impressionism and Expressionism to the spiritual qualities of traditional Chinese ink painting and the quiet aesthetics of Japanese art—Jenny transforms these influences into her own evolving visual vocabulary. From her recent acrylic and mixed-media works to her earlier watercolor paintings, her artistic practice explores the space between the real and the imagined. Guided by intuition and shaped by memory, emotion, and quiet contemplation, without any preconditioned idea, she let the subtle interplay of abstraction and realism emerges naturally and freely, so that each painting is unique and cannot be repeated.

Her early training and long professional practice as a landscape architect have also deeply shaped her way of seeing, fostering a heightened sensitivity to texture, landform, spatial balance, and the beauty of the natural world.

In Eastern cultures, mountains are more than physical forms; they are enduring symbols of strength, stillness, and inner harmony. Each painting emerges as a meditative exploration—a silent dialogue between the artist’s inner world and the vast universe. The serene, atmospheric mountain landscapes in Jenny’s work reveal a gentle synthesis of Eastern and Western aesthetic sensibilities, inviting viewers into a space of calm, reflection, and transcendence.
