Jodi Ferrier

Jodi Ferrier is a Washington, DC based artist whose contemporary paintings gracefully navigate the space between abstraction and representation. Ferrier’s creative process is driven by a profound sense of urgency and a deep-seated desire to capture ephemeral beauty. She approaches the canvas with vigor, using bold, energetic brush strokes. Some paintings reveal themselves swiftly, encapsulating moments of simple beauty, while others develop through layers of exploration and reaction. This dynamic, spontaneous dialogue with her work allows Ferrier to move beyond mere representation, creating pieces that embody the optimism, hope, and wonder that first inspired her.

Ferrier has received multiple Artist Fellowships from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and has participated in prestigious artist residency programs both nationally and internationally. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area and is held in private collections, commercial spaces, and by the DC Government.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

A painting for me begins with a call from external stimuli—something that sparks an emotional response and lingers with me. These moments are gathered continuously as I move through the world: through travel to new places, or encounters with the familiar and mundane that unexpectedly capture my attention.

I begin each painting with urgency, working quickly and boldly, attacking the surface with energetic, lively brushstrokes, focusing on sensation rather than representation. At times, the painting unfolds rapidly, capturing a fleeting moment of simple allure. Other times, it evolves through layers of seeking and meandering—getting lost, reacting, and responding to what the painting reveals to me along the way. As the work develops, it may recall a single moment, or it may begin to pull from multiple gathered memories, and visual fragments, allowing something unexpected to emerge.

My choices are compelled by this spontaneous and intuitive conversation with the painting itself. As a result, the work often moves beyond the resemblance of its initial source, arriving instead at an embodiment of the thrill, optimism, and allure that first ignited the process.
