Joe Rich
Joe Rich is a Toronto based artist. Working in acrylic, ink, spray paint and a variety of mediums Joe primarily paints on canvas and wood. Joe has studied art for the past 18 years and his work has shown in a variety of settings and galleries including the McMichael Gallery and two one person shows. Committed to ongoing education Joe has studied in various settings and institutions, experimenting and painting in a variety of genres - but somehow always returning to nature as a subject matter. Bold. Expressive. Works for the viewer to explore.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I see my work as a collaboration between the viewer, the canvas and myself. Within this triad I often see some remarkable and exceptional exchanges take place. I see the art of painting as a behaviour, designed to express feeling and thoughts. I measure each work upon completion with what are best described as the underpinnings of a well executed work and - if satisfied with the outcome - let go of the work for others to contemplate, enjoy and I imagine accept or reject.

Sometimes the simple can be come complicated in ways that are unexpected. This work began as simple but as it grew so did the complications of colour, form, energy, transition and shape. A sort of “beautifully complicated arrangement” - like life in so many ways.

There are times when the fall winds blow and one can have a flash glance at all of the things that fall can be in the woods. Cool- yet warm. Beautiful -yet harsh. The brush meets the palette knife to create this work. Like in the forest, what peeks out is of interest to the eye. Enjoy.

The painter navigates the canvas as one may navigate the land. Not knowing where one is has its own challenges. Figuring it out…. Inspiring. I am here.

Moving from one spot to the next while painting there may be time to pause and explore the land between two favourite spots. Fresh eyes….. seeing lines and connections not yet seen until the brush is required to paint the canvas.
