Josée Laberge is a 27-year-old self-taught abstract expressionist artist from Ottawa whose work centers upon vivid colours and textures. The artwork she creates is energetic and engaging and conveys a touch of whimsy. She enjoys incorporating various unusual materials and textile pieces in her creations. Her style varies widely but always remains free flowing and intuitive in nature. Josée finds it difficult to label her art as it ebbs and flows with her mood and energy.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

As a mixed media artist, my goal is to transmute energy and emotions through my varying works. I am an intuitive painter and creator of beauty. I ebb and flow where my mediums take me, where the energy guides me and where the beauty wishes to be manifested. I am an eccentric human and that is understood in my art. I wish to constantly push the boundaries of what is different and a little wild. The vivid, fun and energetic is my comfort zone. I love using colours and think they speak volumes when paired together in harmony. I fuel every brush stroke from the soul. Every marking is made with purpose to bring something new, unique and beautiful into this world. I am a free spirit by nature but as someone with bipolar disorder, my passion for creating has also become an outlet. It allows me to channel all the powerful waves of emotions I feel. The mania is a super power of productivity and enthusiasm and the depression is a quiet but pensive mirror into my soul. Both of these energies are channelled through my different artworks. I use a wide array of materials to create my pieces. Anything that sparks joy and emotion is on the table. I see beauty in everything. Nothing is safe from being turned into a living magical piece of art.
