Karen Marki
I am an abstract expressionist artist working primarily in acrylics on canvas. Self-taught, my years in the social justice and sustainability fields have helped inform my craft as a painter. I have been granted Active Status by the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) after my work was reviewed by a jury of fellow artists under a competitive national process. The Federation is a registered charity founded in 1941 by professional Canadian working artists including Group of Seven luminaries. I am a member of the West of Main collaborative with an annual May show and I have my studio at the historic Eastside Atelier building at 1310 Williams Street, Vancouver BC. My art has been in numerous local and international exhibitions and can be seen in the homes and offices of collectors in Vancouver and abroad.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Using quick and layered brushstrokes, I try to capture the lights, sounds, colours and energy of my surroundings where natural beauty and urban grit beautifully coexist. My process includes using unusual tools to create markings and textures inspired by my walks through the gardens and back lanes of the city. Like an excavation site, each of my works are layers of several paintings built onto the canvas encouraging the viewer to see what lies beneath.

In this piece I have used quick and layered brushstrokes to capture the moon reflecting off water in the garden. The evening light captures the sparkles of stars reflected back in the deep blues of night.
