Kevin Byrd

Kevin Byrd is a self-taught artist based in New York, discovered his artistic passion at a young age through drawing and sketching inspired by comic books. His early fascination led him to pursue art in high school. He continued his education and earned a BS degree at Mercy College in Behavioral Scinence. He earn his MFA in 2024 at New Paltz University. He uses painting as a means to express his moral and political views. He employs vibrant paints and distinctive shapes to craft dynamic visual narratives., his art is a compelling fusion of personal expression, societal reflection, and a dedication to conveying the complexities of the human experience.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Kevin Byrd is a self-taught abstract expressionist artist based in New York. At a young age he found his passion by drawing and sketching from comic books. He was an art major at his local High School. His passion for art continued while serving in the Arm Forces by sketching other solders. After serving he became a Correction Officer for the NYS Department of Corrections. While working as a Correction Officer he received a degree in Behavioral Science at Mercy College. He uses acrylic and oil to create vibrant color with the use of a palette knife and the stroke of a paint brush to develop his own unique style. He hopes to capture the imagination of the observer and create an experience that will make a positive change and an impact on a broader cultural landscape. His work often explores themes of African American identity, history, and culture. He uses bright colors that radiate and captivates viewers, prompting deeper examination of social narratives. His work has been published in Black Minds Mag, Oct 2021. Many of his work was exhibited at The Bethany Art Gallery, Ossining New York, 2021. He was selected to display his artwork, by Art on the Avenue, New York. He Taught beginners painting in 2023 at New Paltz University. He is impacted by artist such as Jackson Pollock, Jacob Lawrence, Jean-Michal Basquiat, Kerry James Marshall, and many of the African American contemporary artist. His work captures the imagination of the observer and create an experience that will make a positive change in their mindset. He uses his artwork as a powerful vehicle for storytelling, cultural preservation, and a means of addressing social and political issues. His work also reflects a diverse experience, struggles, and triumphs of the African American communities. It follows the tradition way and hope to serve as a cultural documentation, challenging stereotypes and bring innovation that will resonate globally.
