Leanne Shapka

The beauty of being raised on a ranch and all that freedom entailed propelled Leanne to experiment with materials and art forms since before she can remember. Her love of the prairies and her connection with its landscapes is depicted through atmospheric expressions and lively colour palettes. Her subject matter portrayal is influenced by colour, texture and
movement in order to elicit the viewer’s emotions. Leanne believes this is accomplished not by what you see but how you see. Memory and perception play a big role in this endeavour. Therefore, Leanne considers herself to be an Impressionistic artist who enjoys shifting light while pleine aire painting as often as she can.
Holding a BA in Fine Art, Psychology and Crime and Community from the U of A - Augustana, Leanne has also studied Visual communications and Fine Art in Medicine Hat College, Fashion Design at Blanche Macdonald Institute in Vancouver and most recently completed a B.Ed degree in Secondary Education majoring in Fine Art and minoring in Psychology. Leanne is currently teaching high school students Fine Art, Stained Glass and Psychology at St. Carlo Acutis Catholic High School in Camrose, AB.
Leanne is married to a crazy busy but handsome man, is a Mom to 2 gorgeous daughters and is a new grandma to the most beautifully joyous granddaughter!
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Leanne Spendelow is an Alberta, Canadian artist whose work is rooted in landscape impressionism, capturing the quiet power and shifting moods of light on the prairie. Her paintings explore light, movement, and atmosphere, translating familiar horizons into emotional, almost dreamlike experiences. Deeply inspired by the vastness of the Canadian landscape, L. Spendelow’s greatest passion lies in preserving the spirit of the prairies—expressing their wonder, stillness, and subtle drama before they fade or are forever changed. Her work invites viewers to pause, reflect, and reconnect with a landscape that is both timeless and increasingly fragile.
