ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Guided by intuition and memory, Maku López paints from the unseen, transforming archetypes, dreams, and unconscious impressions into layered canvases that navigate inner territories and invite each viewer to find their own meaning.
New York–based, Maku's work is rooted in memory, dreams, and the unspoken. She merges abstract forms with recognizable archetypes to reveal universal human experiences and emotional states.
Working in oil, oil stick, pigment, and charcoal, Maku begins each canvas with an intuitive field of color—often guided by music—before figures, landscapes, and symbols emerge. Her process is meditative and instinctive, with each painting evolving into a visual conversation between conscious intention and subconscious revelation.
Her visual language centers on transformation, interconnectedness, and the beauty of impermanence, balancing vibrant energy with moments of stillness. Maku believes “the painting knows more than I do,” and titles arrive like whispers, hinting at unseen narratives while leaving space for individual interpretation.
Her work is inspired by transitional moments, spiritual gateways, cultural icons, and the pure joy of color and texture.
