Maria Queiroga, Brazilian born, is a Canadian-based multidisciplinary artist, working primarily with painting, sculpture and installation practices. Graduated in Visual Arts from UFPE (Brazil) and currently studying Expressive Arts Therapy at CREATE Institute (Toronto), her work surrounds themes of memory and self-consciousness. Her first solo show was at the Brazilian Post Cultural Center, selected by a committee, and her first Canadian exhibition was promoted by Akin Collective at Steam Whistle Brewing Gallery, 2018. She is represented by Arte Plural Gallery in Brazil and a member of Sur Gallery, being featured at the Directory of Latino/a Artists at Latin American Canadian Art Projects - LACAP.
I use colors, shapes and symbols to create compositions that I see as visual poetry. Inspired by nature’s shapes and historical, astrological and geometric symbols, my paintings are the result of the relationship between my aesthetic memory and the creation of a particular universe aligned with the pursuit of self-consciousness. Painting is the main technique I use but I search for the freedom to experiment with various techniques and create different compositions with the possibilities they provide me, be it video art, installation, sculpture, printmaking and / or photography.
