Melodie Mui
Born, raised and living in Toronto. I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at York University, majoring in painting. After a hiatus, I returned to my love of painting and in so doing, discovered a passion for watercolour painting.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I enjoy the fluidity and organic flow of watercolour painting with its often surprises. The water is the conduit that flows where the brush and other tools lead and push it. Or it can take a life on its own, moving freely across the paper.
I draw inspiration from nature to create semi-abstract paintings. I look for patterns in nature, particularly in water, rocks and trees that are translated into textures, shapes, and tones in my art. I view my art as abstract representation.
Sometimes paintings pop from my imagination from a memory. Sometimes a photo or another artist will serve as inspiration. Sometimes paintings freely reveal themselves while being painted. Sometimes paintings are planned but the medium changes the outcome. No painting is the same.
As a self-taught watercolourist, I enjoy experimenting and discovering new techniques in the medium. Reflecting, being immersed in the process of painting, is part of the creative journey. Painting is an intuitive experience that allows my imagination to roam.
