Mildor Chevalier is a Brooklyn-based Haitian visual artist. Born in Haiti in 1982, he has lived and worked across the Caribbean and the United States, experiences that inform his interest in identity, place, memory, and belonging. His work merges and transforms fragments of places, memories, and lived experiences into shifting, landscape-like spaces that he calls “situationcapes.”
Chevalier’s work has been exhibited internationally in museums, galleries, biennials, and triennials, including the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in the Dominican Republic (2015); the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art in Wisconsin (2021); the New York Latin American Art Triennial at Pace University Gallery (2022); Artrium Mori Museum in South Korea (2024); and the Musée du Nouveau Monde in La Rochelle, France (2025).

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My work examines identity, belonging, memory, displacement, and the histories that shape how we understand ourselves and our places in the world. Drawing from personal experience, migration, and inherited histories, I work across painting, drawing, and sculpture to construct fragmented spaces where figures, architecture, landscapes, and objects overlap and transform. Across these bodies of work, the personal and collective intersect, revealing how memory, place, and history remain fluid, unresolved, and continually reconstructed.
