Nicole Peña

Nicole Peña is an award-winning figurative painter who earned her Honours Degree in Fine Arts from York University. Throughout her career, she has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Toronto, Ottawa, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, New York, and Bermuda. In 2002, she completed an artist residency in Bermuda with the Masterworks Foundation-an impactful experience where she deeply valued connecting with the local art community and patrons.

A pivotal moment in her creative exploration was a nine-month visit to Botswana. She was profoundly moved and inspired by the pride, joy, and vitality of the people in Mochudi. Their vibrant energy transformed how she approaches the human form and remains a foundational theme of her work.

Drawing from her African and diasporic heritage-including Spiritual Baptist traditions in Trinidad, Carnival iconography, and Black urban dance culture-Peña creates art that serves as a powerful testament to the Black community, honouring its deep spirituality, joy, and enduring presence.

Currently based in Toronto, Canada, she is creating a series of large-scale paintings for her Infinite Visions series, celebrating the Afrofuturism
