Nionda Draper

Nionda Torriell is a Houston-based abstract artist known for her textured, emotionally driven paintings that explore resilience and transformation. Working primarily with acrylic and mixed media, she builds layered surfaces through intuitive mark-making, scraping, and refinement, creating compositions that balance raw expression with structured calm — a style she describes as “distressed luxury.”

Originally from Virginia and now based in Houston, Torriell’s work reflects themes of growth, identity, and emotional depth. Her paintings have been exhibited in artist mixers and exhibitions and are held in private collections. She is a published artist in Novum Artis Magazine (Issue 13). Torriell continues to expand her practice into public and large-scale work, creating pieces that unlock emotion and elevate the spaces they inhabit.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I create work that explores pressure, healing, identity, and transformation through layered color, texture, and fragmented forms. Inspired by emotional resilience and human connection, my paintings often use puzzle-like compositions, bold contrasts, and energetic movement to reflect the complexity of growth and self-discovery.

My work lives between tension and hope — balancing distressed surfaces with vibrant color palettes that suggest both vulnerability and strength. Each piece becomes a visual conversation about rebuilding, belonging, and finding beauty within imperfection.

As an artist, I aim to create immersive works that evoke emotion while offering moments of reflection, curiosity, and optimism. Whether displayed in galleries, public spaces, or healing environments, my intention is for the work to connect with people on a deeply personal level and remind them that broken pieces can still form something powerful.
