Pratibha’s journey as an artist is one of rediscovery. Art had always been a quiet passion during her youth, but life’s demands led her to set it aside. It wasn’t until her move to the U.S. in 2011, amid the challenges of raising a young family, that she found the opportunity to reconnect with her creative side. “I decided this was the time for me to do what I want to do,” Pratibha shares. “My paintings are like words to express my emotions, whether sorrow or joy. Each stroke is a part of the story.”

Through exploration and experimentation, she developed her skills, eventually gravitating toward Warli art, a style she had admired since her childhood.

Warli art, rooted in tribal traditions, is more than visual beauty; it is a narrative medium. Traditionally created on mud walls with rice paste, Warli paintings use geometric shapes—circles, triangles, and squares—to depict themes of harmony between humans, nature, and the cosmos. Pratibha explains, “A circle represents the moon, a triangle symbolizes trees and mountains, and a square is a piece of land. These elements tell a story.”

One recurring motif in her work is the Tree of Life, a symbol of community and interconnectedness. She also often paints the Tarpa dance, a celebration of life and unity that radiates joy through its circular rhythm. “I love how this art communicates without words, how it speaks of simplicity and gratitude,” Pratibha says.

While staying true to the roots of Warli, Pratibha has infused the art form with contemporary flair. Using acrylics and mixed media, she brings a modern vibrancy to the traditional brown and white palette, allowing her work to resonate with wider audiences. “When I started blending tradition with modernity, people began appreciating it even more,” she says. “Each canvas is a thrill, a new story waiting to unfold.”

As a frequent exhibitor, Pratibha enjoys engaging with her audience, many of whom are unfamiliar with Warli art. “I love explaining the meaning and history behind each piece. It’s rewarding when people feel peaceful and connected through my art.”

As a Warli artist, my journey is one of evolution—bridging the ancient with the contemporary. I find joy in blending traditional techniques with modern sensibilities, allowing each creation to speak its own language.
