Raphaele Cohen-Bacry

I am a painter and a mixed media artist. I was born and raised in Paris, France, where I studied painting and printmaking while completing my Doctorate in pharmacology and a degree in performing arts at l’Ecole de la Rue Blanche in Paris. I worked in my Parisian studio for several years, spending time in NYC to work with other artists.
Since moving permanently to the United States, I have participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at Torrance Art Museum, Alliance Française, the Mike Kelley Gallery at Beyond Baroque, Coastline College Art Gallery, ArtShare LA, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, UC Irvine, University of Arizona and Cerritos College Art Gallery. I also regularly participate to artist residencies and special installations. I am a recent awardee of a one-year grant from the Picerne Family Foundation that allowed me to work with two Los Angeles ranches and bring art to adults and children with social and emotional challenges. In June 2024 I was part of the Studio System cohort of TAM-Torrance Art Museum artist residency that was a profound experience and a unique opportunity for exploration. I just completed a 3-month artist residency at Camera Obscura in Santa Monica.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I am an interdisciplinary artist and while painting remains my central medium, my practice spans collage, assemblage, video, and installation. I often work with unexpected materials—art magazines, wallpaper, playing cards, cardboard, driftwood—inviting a dialogue between the ordinary and the poetic. My creative process is fluid and exploratory, driven by a desire to reconfigure meaning from fragments. Each medium I explore informs the others, deepening my visual language and broadening the conceptual terrain of my work.
