Réka Lukács

I am a Hungarian-born, Los Angeles-based artist whose work explores the tension between softness and structure through sculptural forms. Using acrylic, fabric, plaster, and other mixed media, I create what I call “sculpture-like paintings” pieces that blur the line between painting and sculpture. My goal is to create a sensory contradiction: to make the viewer see something fluid and silky, yet discover it is rigid and sculpted.

My creative process is guided by emotion and intuition, deeply shaped by my European background and personal experience. Each piece captures the illusion of movement frozen in time, inviting the viewer to pause and reflect.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My work explores the tension between softness and structure through sculptural forms. Using acrylic, fabric, plaster, and other mixed media, I create what I call “sculpture-like paintings” pieces that blur the line between painting and sculpture.
A central aim of my work is to confuse the viewer’s senses. I want their eyes to perceive something fluid and silky, only for their touch to reveal that it’s rigid and unexpectedly stiff. This play between illusion and material reality creates a moment of surprise, wonder, and sensory contradiction.
I want my audience to feel an irresistible urge to touch, to reconcile what they see with what they feel.
My creative process is based on emotion and intuition, shaped by my European background and personal experience. Each piece is a quiet invitation to explore ambiguity between softness and hardness, movement and stillness, appearance and truth.
