Self expression through art is an amazing feeling and finding that special something new to inspire the creative process is thrilling and exciting. Thomas is a multi-media artist who enjoys the exploration of art and the thrill of a new challenge. He tries to visually tell a story with each work, whether it is in the art itself or the journey in creating the piece. He has always had an interest in art which he pursued through frequent visits to the Art Gallery of Ontario and other local galleries. His interest developed into a desire to create his own art, evolving from wood carving, to drawing in pastels, and painting in acrylics, oils, watercolours, as well as mosaic art. He went on receive a Certificate in Fine Art from George Brown College. Thomas’ work is in private collections across Canada and the United States. Two of his paintings are in the permanent Toronto Collection and Digital Archive of the Toronto Reference Library.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
With the onset of the pandemic in 2020 I realized my journey in art started to change. I painted fewer landscapes, figurative, and representational artwork, and began to explore cubism and abstraction. My plein air trips stopped as I focus solely on studio work. The new work was wonderous, and the thrill of completing a cubist painting in a matter of hours was an amazing feeling. It was exhausting and exhilarating. It has led me to work I started in 2024, something I call non-representational cubism. It follows some of the basic technical constructions of cubism but is completely non-representational. It begins with basic mark-making which anchors the piece, then shapes are added, followed by depth; all completely random as it flows from my brain through my hand to the art. The viewer is left to interpret and appreciate the work completely on their own. It is fascinating to hear about what other people see.
