Zoe Caron
I attended UC Berkeley for bachelor's degrees in plant biology and integrative biology from 2014-2018. While earning my degrees, I experienced life as a field botanist in the forests of the California Bay Area, identifying and drawing the flora and fauna that I love. After graduation, I worked at a sustainable agricultural biotechnology company for six years in Berkeley, CA, but I left my biotech job last year to pursue a career as a full-time artist and part-time soil science instructor at Las Positas Community College in Livermore. My dual backgrounds in science and art give me a deeper well of knowledge about the native flora and fauna which are my subject matter. I’ve used the past year to gain direct experience in creating multiple works of public art which instill a sense of unity with nature in the California Bay Area.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My artwork is a celebration of all things living. Growing up in a home with my biologist parents provided the fertile ground in which to cultivate my curiosity and appreciation for the beauty, uniqueness, and diversity of life on earth. Working primarily with acrylic, watercolor, pen and ink, pencil, and digital media, I illustrate highly detailed organisms. Crisp lines, natural patterns and shapes, overlaid on backdrops of intense abstractions, express the flow and energy of our natural environment. I hope that viewers of my work will experience some of the same childlike sense of wonder for nature that inspires me.
