Adeoluwa Jones

Adeoluwa Jones is a multidisciplinary, passionate, and inventive artist based in the Washington DC area. As an artist, his style consists of mixed media & digital collage work that focuses on using visual language to retell the shared stories of black humanity and tell new stories centering the black voice. Stylistically, he maintains roots and connections to his childhood inspirations including hip hop, anime, cartoons, comic books, album covers, black culture/aesthetics, Japanese culture/aesthetics, etc. He primarily works in collage because it allows him to reappropriate and restructure the world to illustrate new perspectives and tell new stories.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

The only real concept that inspires my work is illustrating the experiences of black humanity in a way that allows for the breadth of “us” to be shown. However, through that concept, I’m rarely without inspiration as something as simple as a song lyric can spark the creative itch in me to illustrate something new and showcase a side of the black voice that is not often communicated. A core influence that anchors my practice is always and will forever be music. My pieces aren’t simply narrative statements but more of a conduit to foster emotional connectivity. Therefore, whenever I create, music is always a present catalyst for me to transmute feeling onto the canvas. The chords of Akira Senju, drums of Mobb Deep, lyrics of Sade, vocal inflections of Amaarae, or temperature of a Nujabes record influence my choices of color, composition, image choice, texture and material. My only wish for those who view my work, is to connect with it however it uniquely speaks to them.
