Alexandria Lopez

I’m Alex Lopez, a Queens, NY artist who is a self-taught illustrator and school teacher. My work is inspired by my children and the excitement of daily life in my two communities – Brooklyn by day when I’m at work, and Kew Gardens by evening.
As a child my curiosity in visual arts stemmed from the way my father, an established artist himself, raised me. He taught me how to appreciate art during long museum trips together and guided me patiently in learning how to work with pencil and acrylic. Growing up, the supports I was given by my dad developed into a self-guided discovery in using ink pen on paper. I love this medium because it provides a sense of permanence, which can be intimidating but exciting. Through illustration I am focused on patterns and whimsy through ink and colored pencil.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

The artwork in my portfolio ranges from whimsical illustrations of people, children, and places to real life objective work. I began in pattern work, where I would create an image and challenge myself to replicate it in an ordered fashion. Then, I worked in both minimalist with just black and white images as well as some color with colored pencil in design work with multiple and varied illustrations. Recently, I have been working on a series in more technical work in drawing real life places and homes, places I've been, and places that intrigue.
