Celina Melo
Celina Melo is a landscape artist, whose acrylic and mixed media paintings feature the spectacular vistas of Georgian Bay. The physical texture of the work combined with the sparkle of her finished surfaces evoke the rugged, yet soothing experience of being at the water's edge.
Melo graduated cum laude from York University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours Specialist in Visual Arts and a Bachelor of Education in 2006. She is a teacher for Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.
Melo’s art is exhibited in juried shows across the Greater Toronto Area and Southern Ontario. She is an active member of the Colour and Form Society, Lakeshore Art Trail, Mississauga Arts Council, Visual Arts Mississauga, and Ontario College of Teachers. She currently lives in Mississauga and enjoys cottage life in Tiny on the shores of Georgian Bay with her husband, daughters and Labrador Retriever.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I am compelled to capture and celebrate the intensity, rhythm and power of water. Georgian Bay often acts as muse, as my landscape paintings tie my Canadian experience of being near the lake at my cottage with the awe-inspiring and therapeutic properties of water. Through my paintings, I invite the viewer to my calming, yet overwhelming experience of standing at the water’s edge.
My process explores the reflective, colour-changing qualities of water and sky. Moving across the painting, the sheen of the pouring medium mimics the sparkle and dynamism of water, bringing a sense of life and transformation to the canvas. Bold textures balance and contrast with the delicate sheen, just as nature and life grace us with tranquility and engulf us simultaneously. Gestural lines and reflective pools over aspects of painted imagery and texture combine to create a landscape that meanders between abstraction and realism.

The surf reaches toward you as you imagine that you are in fact standing at the Water's Edge. Modeling paste and cheesecloth are sculpted to form the ripples of frothy surf and gauzy clouds. Pouring medium is layered in ripples and creates a translucent glow as the setting sun peeks through the clouds to dance on the water.
