Claire M Levy-Boker
Born in Morocco, I moved to Canada with my family. I grew up in Montreal and at the age of 25, moved to Israel on my own. I lived there for 12 years. My 3 sons were born there. In 2002, I moved back to Canada, to Toronto this time. My professional life is quite eclectic. I was a teacher, a translator, a hi-tech office manager, a grant writer and currently I work as the Member and Program Coordinator at Congregation Darchei Noam.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My art is my voice, my word, my song. The canvas is where I express my true self. Painting and creating takes me out of my concrete reality and into a beautiful and bold abstract world. Playing with textures is one of my favourite ways to express how life is not smooth or bland. Bold colours also have an important place in my pieces. Like my taste in music, my art can be quite eclectic. With it, with my voice, I express love and beauty, quirkiness and darkness, bounty and scarcity.
I take inspiration from moods, my surroundings, nature, stories and other artists. Sometimes I will start a piece and know it's not right, not the way I envisioned. So I stop, I leave it in close proximity but I don't work on it. Later, sometimes much later, it comes to me, exactly what I need to do to make it right.
Art speaks when words are unable to explain or express. I believe art is as much an exploration as a communication of emotions, states of mind and declarations.
